Nice is well connected: the airport is close to the centre and the coastal railway lets you visit several towns without a car. For the hinterland and hilltop villages, a rental car remains more flexible.

In summer, demand for accommodation is very high: book early and choose free cancellation. Nice’s beaches are pebbly, so bring suitable shoes.

Best areas to stay in Nice

Vieux-Nice (Old Town)

Ideal for: couples, solo, first visit

Colourful lanes, markets and restaurants, a stone's throw from the sea. Very lively: great atmosphere, not always quiet, and limited car access.

Promenade des Anglais and Carré d'or

Ideal for: families, seniors, beach holidays

Along the seafront and the streets just behind, handy for the beach and the centre. Many hotels in every category.

Port district (Lympia)

Ideal for: couples, local life

Quieter than the Old Town while staying close, with good restaurants and a starting point for walks along the eastern coast.

Around Nice-Ville station and Libération

Ideal for: budget, day trips by train

Practical for trains to Monaco, Menton or Cannes. A more urban area, with often more affordable accommodation.
